Decorating committee soliciting tonight
KULPMONT — The Kulpmont Decorating Committee will hold a door-to-door fund-raiser starting at 6 p.m. today.
Residents are asked to leave their porch lights on.
The committee goal is to purchase 30 lights. Current funds would allow about half of that.
Sewage plants focus of power savings
LEWISBURG — The biggest user of electricity, in many communities, is the local wastewater treatment plant.
Those are the findings of analyses conducted by the SEDA-COG Energy Resource Center (ERC). In an effort to help communities lower those costs, SEDA-COG is co-sponsoring Flush Away High Energy Costs Tuesday at the Country Cupboard restaurant, through which operators of treatment facilities and their consulting engineers will be introduced to cost-saving measures.
According to the Energy Center’s Megan Epler, “Many of Central Pennsylvania’s wastewater treatment plants experience unnecessarily high operating costs due to overloading, failing equipment, lack of process-control instrumentation, and operating problems. These conditions often result in excessive energy use.”
And she said already-high costs will be going up.
Instruction at Flush Away High Energy Costs will be offered by trainers from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
Treatment plants’ motors and pumps are the primary energy user, and Flush Away High Energy Costs will focus on motors, highlighting their speed, efficiency and sizing.
In addition to SEDA-COG, co-sponsors include DEP and the Pennsylvania Rural Water Association (PRWA). The seminar has been approved by DEP for six Water & Wastewater contact hours toward the Operator certification requirements, for those who are eligible.
Cost is $75 for PRWA members and $100 for non-members; lunch will be provided.
Individuals may register online at www.prwa.com. The seminar is listed under “training.”
For additional information, contact Epler at 524-4491 or at mepler@seda-cog.org.
