MOUNT CARMEL — A Mount Carmel man and two juveniles will face burglary charges for allegedly attempting to break into a South Vine Street home Monday morning.
Patrolman David Donkochik charged Mark D. Melnick, 20, of 41 W. Sixth St., with burglary, criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief. A 15-year-old male and 14-year-old male, both of Mount Carmel, face the same charges.
The officer reported the trio forced their way into the home of Julio Spallone at 247 S. Vine St. and stole prescription medications, tools and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Melnick was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Michael F. Mychak and committed to Northumberland County Prison, Sunbury, in lieu of $15,000 bail. The two juveniles were charged in Northumberland County Juvenile Court and were committed to Northwestern Academy. Donkochik was assisted by Patrolman Justin Stelma.
Criminal mischief
COAL TOWNSHIP — Janine Wywadis, 36, of 816 W. Pine St., reported to Coal Township police that her rear patio door was smashed sometime between 8:40 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Harassment
SHAMOKIN — Shannon A. Roughton, 26, of 1000 E. Clay St., Shamokin, was cited for harassment by Patrolman William J. Zalinski for allegedly slapping Natasha Hornberger in the face with an open hand.
Police said the incident took place at Roughton’s home at 8:06 p.m. July 10, and that Hornberger sustained red blemish marks on her face.
Retail theft
MOUNT CARMEL — Three juvenile borough girls were cited for retail theft for allegedly attempting to steal several items from Turkey Hill Minit Market at 4 p.m. Monday.
Patrolman Justin Stelma reported Turkey Hill employees observed the three females wandering around the store and placing items into a purse. When the females attempted to leave the store, an employee stopped them and detained them until police arrived.
While on scene, police said, the females admitted to taking the items because they didn’t have enough money to pay for them.
Purse theft
COAL TOWNSHIP — Wendy Menne, of Coal Township, reported that a blue child’s purse and a six pack of Pepsi were stolen from her vehicle while it was parked in the 1300 block of West Arch Street between Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning.
Menne told police there were approximately 15 children’s trinket toys inside the purse, valued at $120.

Public drunkenness
MOUNT CARMEL — James J. Lindenmuth, 45, of 437 East Ave., Mount Carmel, was charged with public drunkenness after he was allegedly observed leaving the office of Magisterial District Judge Michael F. Mychak while highly intoxicated at 10:23 a.m. Thursday at Fifth and Market streets.
Police alleged Lindenmuth had difficulty walking, smelled of alcohol and was stumbling across a busy roadway. A preliminary breath test determined his blood-alcohol content was .35 percent, police said.
