Community service
COAL TOWNSHIP — Magisterial District Judge John E. Gembic III’s Community Service Group will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at Crown Lanes bowling alley.
Pension benefits approved
SHAMOKIN — During a meeting Monday night, Shamokin City Council unanimously agreed to pay half of former Shamokin Police Chief Richard Nichols’ pension benefits to his widow, Glenda Nichols.
Richard Nichols, who was a Shamokin police officer for 25 years before retiring as chief in December 2005, died May 23 at the age of 61.
Negotiator hired
SHAMOKIN — Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersoll LLP, of Philadelphia, was hired Monday night by Shamokin City Council to serve as a negotiator for police and street department employee contracts.
City Manager Dave Bohanick said the negotiator was hired to save the city money in the long run during negotiations. Council did not establish an overall cost for the negotiator, but Bohanick said services could range from $250 to $300 per hour, according to the firm’s proposal.
The city has hired contract negotiators in the past, but for many years, police officers and street department workers have negotiated their own contracts with council members.
