Athletic director hiring clarified

MOUNT CARMEL — On Friday morning, Mount Carmel Area Superintendent Cheryl Latorre clarified the circumstances surrounding Thursday night’s hiring of Greg Sacavage as athletic director.

Sacavage, who serves as junior high school principal, was hired to serve as athletic director on an 8-1 vote at no added expense to the district. Sacavage will receive his annual salary of $56,650 for the 2008-09 school year while serving as athletic director and assuming other administrative duties. He will not be paid a stipend of $4,000 as indicated on the original motion listed on Thursday’s board meeting agenda.

Latorre said the district plans to advertise for a junior high principal to replace Sacavage.


Board member Charles Mannello cast the lone dissenting vote to hire Sacavage as athletic director. Directors approving the appointment were Dennis Hepler, Donna James. Michael Rovito, the Rev. Rose Marquardt, Judy McCollum, Robert Muldowney, Eric Belfanti and Dr. Ray Kraynak.

National Night Out in Zerbe Township

TREVORTON — The second National Night Out event in Zerbe Township will be held Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the Foundry recreation area. Anyone wishing to participate is asked to call the township municipal building 797-1974.

More business from M.C. Twp. meeting

ATLAS — In remaining business from Thursday’s meeting of Mount Carmel Township Board of Supervisors, Debby L. Beaver was hired as a full-time administrative assistant with health benefits.

A $41,750.50 contract was awarded to Meckley’s Limestone Products Inc. of Herndon for micro-sealing of township roads.

A handicap parking place was approved for 233 W. Girard St.

The board will advertise for a part-time street department employee.

Supervisors Sam Scicchitano and Reynold Scicchitano were approved to represent the board of supervisors in negotiations with non-uniformed employees regarding the establishment of a Mount Carmel Township Non-Uniformed Employee contract.

Hirings approved by MCA school board

MOUNT CARMEL — In personnel matters handled during Thursday’s meeting of Mount Carmel Area School Board, Carissa Skavery was hired as a high school French and Latin teacher at a salary of $27,593 with benefits.

Abigail Spurr was hired as a special education teacher at a salary of $27,593 with benefits. Lisa Bonshock was hired a pre-kindergarten/diabetic aide at a salary of $18,500 with benefits.

Dr. Jeff Greco was approved as the district’s physician for sports physicals at a cost of $1,000 for the 2008-09 school year.

Assistant football coach Robert Varano voluntarily agreed to have the board decrease his salary from $3,800 to $2,800. Joe Ahrensfield was approved as a freshman football coach at a salary of $1,000 and Pete Cheddar was appointed head freshman football coach.

Colleen B. Hess was approved as the seventh-grade girls’ basketball coach at a salary of $1,100 and John Lepley was hired as an assistant boys’ soccer coach at a salary of $1,400.

The board raised the prices of VIT (Very Important Tornado) passes from $15 to 20 for students and $30 to $35 for adults.
