NUMIDIA — Firefighters from 10 different municipalities worked diligently, but a good head start worked to completely destroy a home on Kennedy Road in Cleveland Township.
The home of Anatole Scaun of 89 Kennedy Road was considered a total loss after the fire that fully engulfed the 5,600-square foot structure and touched off a brush fire that state agencies needed to be called for assistance.
John Mack, first assistant chief for Valley Chemical Fire Company in Numidia, said the blaze had a head start as emergency crews were arriving on scene after being called out at 1:25 p.m.
“The fire started in a two-car garage that was detached from the home, but when we got there, it was starting to hit the home, around the back,” Mack said.
Mack said that Scaun was visiting a rental house on the property when he heard a popping sound. Upon returning to his home and seeing the fire, he quickly alerted his wife, who was not identified, to get her out of the house and call 911.
A state police fire marshal was on scene on Sunday, and Mack said the fire is under investigation at this time, only saying that it started in the garage and is being considered accidental at this point, but said the home is a total loss.
The blaze also touched off a five-acre brush fire in the area in which the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources was called in to help battle.
While fire crews worked to put out the flames, one thing that many were concerned with was the heat, not only from the fire but with temperatures in the low 90s and humidity.
“We were thankful that we had a great rehabilitation unit on scene to keep everyone cooled down and plenty of firefighters so that the work could be done in shifts,” Mack said. “Because of the preparedness, no injuries occurred and there were no complications from the heat.”
Crews were released from the scene at 6:53 p.m.
Mack estimated that there were close to 100 firefighters on the site, along with appratus from Numidia, Catawissa, Aristes, Wilburton No. 1, Overlook, Elysburg, Main Township, Buckhorn, Lightstreet, Montour Township.
