Bridge work underway on Interstate 80

MONTOURSVILLE — PennDOT reports that the contractor making repairs along Interstate 80 in Northumberland County is now working at an additional bridge site in the eastbound lanes; this one between mile markers 213 and 214.

Eastbound traffic will be restricted to the passing lane at the bridge over Muddy Run and Muddy Run Road in Turbot Township. This traffic restriction is expected to be in place for about five days. No width restrictions are needed for this work site. Meanwhile, the contractor continues to work on the I-80 eastbound and westbound bridges at the Northumberland/Montour county line, about a mile east of Exit 215 (Limestoneville). The driving lanes are closed at those sites.

Motorists are advised that back-ups and delays are possible at these work sites along Interstate 80 in Northumberland County.

BLOOMSBURG — Lawrence Fritz, a biologist who taught at universities in Nova Scotia, Arizona and Maine, is Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s new assistant vice president and dean of graduate studies and research. Fritz fills the vacancy created by the retirement of James Matta.

Most recently chair and professor of the department of biological sciences and director of the professional science master’s program at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine, Fritz previously taught biology and conducted research at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Earlier in his career, he was a research officer with the National Research Council-Canada, Institute for Marine Biosciences.

From 2000 to 2002, Fritz was a program director with the National Science Foundation, Division of Biological Infrastructure, Arlington, Va. In that capacity, he distributed more than $50 million in research grants and gained insight into the components of successful grant applications, which he’s shared in workshops.
