Picnic adds spark to MC Town Park

MOUNT CARMEL — A tradition returns to Mount Carmel’s Town Park as the Mount Carmel Volunteer Emergency Services Association (MCVESA) holds its 12th Annual Picnic in the Park to the borough this weekend.

The event begins tonight at 6 p.m. and culminates with a large fireworks display at the AMJBL fields at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Joe Kripplebauer, vice president of MCVESA and chairman of the picnic committee, said the event used to be hosted at the baseball fields, but a change was made in 1996 to help bring more people out to enjoy the picnic.

“Back then, the idea was to make the event centrally located,” Kripplebauer said. “With the town park, more people can walk here, enjoy the picnic and then walk home, rather than driving to the old baseball fields.”

One noticeable change wil be a lack of rides and some games, which were cut from this year’s celebration because they cost too much.

“For economic reasons, we are not having the rides this year,” he said.

Several other groups have stepped up to fill the void.

“Some of Mount Carmel’s community groups and residents, such as the Community Watch group and others, will be bringing some games and other stands to the picnic, so it will just be done on a smaller scale, more in line with many of the other picnics in the area,” Kripplebauer said.

The tradition of great food and entertainment is also in place. Picnic organizers have rounded up a lot of fun for the next three days.

Thursday night will feature music by the Shoreliners from 7 to 11 p.m., a well-known area polka band that has developed quite a following from the older crowd. The picnic runs from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

Friday’s events begin with the fire apparatus parade, beginning at 7 p.m. Following the parade, the first of two fireman’s battle competitions will be held.

“The fireman’s battle is equivalent to a tug-of-war,” Kripplebauer says. “Two teams stand on either side of a barrel and use the fire hose to try to get it across a line while the other team goes in the opposite direction.”

Friday’s competition will be strictly for out-of-town fire companies. In-town companies begin competing at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Friday’s entertainment will be provided by popular oldies band Shama-Lama, playing from 7 to 11 p.m.

Saturday’s picnic runs from noon to midnight with entertainment from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. by rock band ‘Lights over Ashfield,” followed by fireworks, which are sponsored by Clover Hose Fire Company.

There will be a special basket raffle at Picnic in the Park to help defray the cost of the display. Anyone wishing to make a donation may send one to Clover Hose Company, 301 S. Oak St., Mount Carmel 17851.

Proceeds from Picnic in the Park will go to the Mount Carmel Borough Emergency Truck Fund, which benefits all four fire companies in the borough.
