Ashland Rotary news

HEGINS — Continuing a tradition during the summer months, the Ashland Area Rotary Club traveled to the “Valley” for a joint meeting with the Hegins-Valley View Rotary Club. The Ashland group look forward to visiting with members of the nearby club.

Two Boy Scouts were present to enlighten us on the requirements to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Brock Klinger is working toward his Eagle award with a project to design, construct and erect a sign at a nursing home. Daniel Walter has attained Eagle Scout rank with his project to send packages of personal items to service personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan. The fine young men described their efforts in planning and leading their projects.

A special guest was Nelson Texira of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He had been a Rotary exchange student during his senior year in high school and had returned to the area for the 25th year class reunion. He spoke of his current position and commented on the impact that the year as an exchange student had in developing him for his future career.

Many thanks go to our hosts for the delicious meal and great camaraderie. We will attempt to return the favor when they travel to Ashland for the return visit on Tuesday, August 19.

CHRISTMAS SHOW AND DINNER — The club is sponsoring a bus trip to the American Music Theatre Sunday, Nov. 9, to see the Christmas show. This trip was scheduled for last year, but was cancelled due to an ice storm. In a most unusual but generous practice, the theater, restaurant and bus owners gave a rain check and have permitted the club to reschedule for this year. Anyone who made a reservation last year is assured a seat, but is asked to confirm their reservation with Connie Wydra as soon as possible. The bus will leave at noon and we will be attending the show at 3 p.m. followed by dinner at the Plain and Fancy Restaurant. There are a few available seats for additional persons that can be reserved by calling Wydra. The cost is $66 per adult, which includes the bus, show, dinner, and gratuities.

Sunday Focus: John 17: 1-13. When Jesus had spoken these words, He lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, \”Father, the hour has come; glorify thy Son that the Son may glorify thee, since Thou hast given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom Thou hast given him, and this is eternal life, that they know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent. I glorified thee on earth, having accomplished the work which Thou gavest me to do; and now, Father, glorify Thou me in Thy own presence with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was made. \”I have manifested Thy name to the men whom Thou gavest me out of the world; thine they were, and Thou gavest them to me, and they have kept Thy word.

Now they know that everything that Thou hast given me is from thee, for I have given them the words which Thou gavest me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from Thee; and they have believed that Thou didst send me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those whom Thou hast given me, for they are Thine, all mine are Thine, and Thine are mine, and I am glorified in them.

And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to Thee, Holy Father, keep them in Thy name, which Thou hast given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in Thy name, which Thou hast given me. I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to Thee, and these things I speak in the world that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
