Sound Off: First time caller

First time caller

I am a first time caller to Sound Off. I disagree with Mrs. Latorre’s justification for the 26-mill tax increase. The directors should be rebuked and not praised for their irresponsible act. The salary for Mr. Sacavage is insane. It is basically his principal salary minus the responsibilities. With regard to hiring another principal, the taxpayers cannot afford it. Mrs. John performed the job solo and Mr. Stellar is capable of the same. If you restructure Mr. Sacavage’s salary and do not hire another principal you can restore the teaching cuts.

Boring fireworks

Thanks Mount Carmel for the boring fireworks. We sat there for an hour-and-a-half. You said dusk. It was 10:33 p.m. when they started going off. My kids fell asleep and missed it.

Inflation blues

In today’s News-Item there is an article on inflation that is very interesting. All the retailers are crying the blues because they are not making big profits but you don’t see anybody cutting back on hours or cutting back on power. You don’t need to be open 24 hours a day and have your lights on all the time. They should also go back to no store hours on a Sunday and let Sunday be a day for the Lord and a day of rest, not for the consumers to be out spending money and stores to make big profits.

The shearing

The stock market investors are being lead into the pens for a shearing.

Do something

When is the city of Shamokin and the code enforcement officer going to do something with the burned out and condemned building at 19 N. Shamokin St.? The windows are out; the birds, bats and pigeons are going in. The low-lifes are storing auto parts and old motorcycles inside the building. This is a residential area, not a junkyard. But then Shamokin doesn’t do anything about junkyards in residential areas.

Priorities straight

Fifty-six thousand dollars for an athletic director? I think Mount Carmel High School should be more worried about their school teachers making less than $30,000 a year. Maybe we should get our priorities straight and it is not just about football.

Rotten juice

I see in Tuesday’s paper there was garbage juice spilled in Shamokin. At least your fire companies came and washed it off. Come to Mount Carmel. We have it on every block and it is never washed off. It is terrible.

No bikes

Mount Carmel Borough has an ordinance. No bicycles on Oak Street. There is a sign that says “no bicycling.” Today a youngster on a bicycle hit a visitor’s car on Oak Street.

" I enjoyed the Mount Carmel Fireworks. If You want to complain why not complain about Shamokins fireworks.. Atleast they lasted longer than 10 Mins & they were great. Some People in this town have nothing else to complain about so they complain about everything nice the communinty tries to do... This is starting to get distusting. Thank you for doing something nice for the community & not having someone ruin it. "
