Police Blotter: Fatal accident

Fatal accident

SCOTT TOWNSHIP — Daniel J. Hummel, 18, of Mifflinville, was killed in a one-car crash early Monday morning along Interstate 80 in this Columbia County township.

State police at Bloomsburg reported Hummel, who was not wearing a seat belt, was driving a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant east at 3:18 a.m. when he lost control of his car while going around a curve. The car then traveled through the median strip and went over a 15-foot embankment before going airborne and landing in the right lane of the highway. Police said the car continued to flip several times before coming to rest on the north shoulder upside down, facing east.

During the crash, Hummel was ejected from the vehicle and landed up an embankment, north of where his car came to rest.

The car was demolished in the accident.

Fire ruled arson

MOUNT CARMEL TOWNSHIP — A fire late Saturday morning at a vacant commercial building off Route 54, between Natalie and Strong, has been ruled arson, according to Mount Carmel Township police.

Lt. Brian Hollenbush, who is serving as acting police chief, reported the blaze broke out at 11:46 a.m. at an area known as the “Pit.” Upon his arrival, Hollenbush said he spotted heavy black smoke coming from the structure. He said the rear of the building was well involved. Nobody was inside the structure.

The fire was brought under control within an hour, after which an investigation was initiated to determine the cause, which was later ruled arson.

Hollenbush said the rear of the structure sustained heavy fire damage, while the remaining parts of the building suffered smoke and water damage.

The building, which is owned by Cathy Sosnoski of Marion Heights, was used primarily to house heavy equipment and parts by Sosnoski’s late husband, Michael Sosnoski. Following his death, police said the building was cleaned out.

Anyone with information about the fire is urged to contact Hollenbush at 339-1653.

Hollenbush thanked the fire and emergency personnel who responded and especially praised Sunbury Rehabilitation Unit and Mount Carmel fire police for closing off the road at the intersection of Routes 54 and 61, and the road at the co-generation plant.
