Police warn of unlicensed vendors
COAL TOWNSHIP — Township police have received reports of people soliciting door-to-door, offering various goods for sale.
Residents are reminded that salespersons selling legitimate goods will have a valid permit issued by the municipality and signed by the chief of police. This permit must be available to view on demand, and citizens should ask to see it before agreeing to purchase any merchandise.
Citizens are requested to contact the Coal Township Police Department at 644-0333 if approached by salespersons who cannot display a valid permit on request.
MCA hires biology teacher
MOUNT CARMEL — Mount Carmel Area School Board unanimously hired Amy Mudry as a high school biology teacher at a salary of $28,407 with benefits during a special meeting Monday night.
Mudry had served as a biology teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School for the past four years.
The Mount Carmel Schoool Board accepted the resignation of high school science teacher Tara Varner, who also served as the adviser for the Class of 2011.
One-woman art exhibit to open Friday
SHAMOKIN — The Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities will host a one-woman art exhibition of the work of Bloomsburg artist Sharon Goverick Swank at the Northumberland County Career and Arts Center Fine Art Gallery.
The exhibit will cover a variety of old and new pieces, with topics ranging from landscapes to personified shadows in the woods to dog portraits.
The show will run from Friday until Sept. 26, with an opening reception from 6:30 to 8 p.m. opening night. Refreshments will be provided and the reception is free and open to the public.
The gallery is located on the bottom floor of the Northumberland County Career and Arts Center, Eighth and Arch streets. Regular gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays.
Concert, wine tasting Thursday
NORTHUMBERLAND — The season finale Community Concert Series with wine and cheese tasting will be held 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday on the Scenic Overlook section of Shikellamy State Park.
Blues and funk band Blind Chitlin Kahunas will perform, while local wine and cheese makers will provide a sampling of their wares, which will be available for purchase. Snacks, pastries and non-alcoholic beverages will also be available.
Large shade tents, towering trees in the picnic area and the new playground equipment make it a great way for the entire family to relax, listen to music and enjoy the Scenic Overlook. Picnic baskets are welcome, as are dogs on leashes.
Other activities scheduled for the season include the Sunset Drum Circle that will gather at the Point in the Marina from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21. This is an open-air circle drum that happens rain or shine. Drummers are encouraged to bring their own drums. Additional instruments will be available for use. This is the season finale of the Sunset Drum Circle, and will be facilitated by Hope Kopf and Stu Shrawder. The 2nd Annual Fall Harvest Festival is set for Sunday, Oct. 12, with more details to be announced.
Friends of Shikellamy State Park, Northumberland, a chapter of the PA Parks and Forests Foundation, is a non-profit group that celebrates the natural beauty and recreational resources of the Susquehanna River. By coordinating public events at the Marina and the Overlook, Friends of Shikellamy encourage the use and care of this natural treasure.
