Foot chase
SHAMOKIN — A 17-year-old Marion Heights teen was charged with drug offenses following a foot chase with police at 9:58 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Movie Gallery video store, Sixth and Walnut streets.
Patrolman Jarrod Scandle reported in court documents that while he was on bike patrol he noticed two individuals inside a vehicle in the store’s parking lot, then observed a flickering of a lighter being activated. As he approached closer, Scandle reportedly smelled an aroma of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
At that point, the teen allegedly left the vehicle and ran away with Scandle in pursuit. The male then ran south on Fifth Street, turning onto Water Street and then jumping off a wall and into the bed of Shamokin Creek continuing west. The male then exited the creek bed through a railroad bridge and ran toward Arch Street and again jumped into the creek bed, Scandle reported, where he was apprehended by police.
The other male in the vehicle got away, police said.
After speaking with the vehicle’s owner, police searched the vehicle and allegedly found a soda can fashioned to be a smoking device and a small amount of marijuana. The teen was released into the custody of his mother later that night.
Police charged him with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a small amount of marijuana and resisting arrest. The charges were filed in Northumberland County Juvenile Court.
