TREMONT — A Berwick man was killed Friday afternoon on Interstate 81 in Tremont Township when his vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer.
William W. Bowman, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner Wallace Hodgson. Police said Bowman was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and that drugs and alcohol are not suspected as a cause of the crash.
Police said the crash occurred about 3:30 p.m. as the tractor-trailer and Bowman’s Ford Econoline van were traveling north on I-81. As the two vehicles approached a construction zone, Edward Naugin, 71, of Throop, who was driving a Mack tractor-trailer, slowed his rig in the right lane as he approached congested traffic.
Police said Bowman failed to slow down, and his vehicle collided into the back of the tractor-trailer.
The van was towed, but the tractor-trailer was able to be driven from the scene. The northbound lanes of the highway were closed temporarily while the scene was being cleared.
Troopers from Jonestown and Frackville and emergency personnel from Ravine, Suedberg and Tremont assisted at the scene.
