You’ve got a friend at Shikellamy State Park

SUNBURY — Summer may be coming to a close, but there’s plenty of outdoor fun planned in Sunbury, thanks to the Friends of Shikellamy State Park.

Friends of Shikellamy State Park, located in Northumberland, is a chapter of the PA Parks and Forests Foundation. The non-profit group celebrates the natural beauty and recreational resources of the Susquehanna River. By coordinating public events at the Marina and the Overlook, Friends of Shikellamy encourage the use and care of this natural treasure.

The Shikellamy State Park, operated by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), is situated at the confluence of the North and West Branches of the Susquehanna River between Northumberland and Sunbury, and offers plenty for biking, hiking and boating enthusiasts.

Friends of Shikellamy State Park adds to the park’s enjoyment with music, food and wine.

The non-profit organization wrapped up its summer-long Community Concert Series on Thursday with a wine and cheese tasting event at the Overlook.

Despite threat of thunderstorms, patrons enjoyed music by Blind Chitlin Kahunas while sampling wine from Shade Valley Vineyards, Middleburg, cheese from Three Belle Cheese, Mifflinburg, and desserts from BabyCakes Bakery, Herndon. The crowd was substantial, but not as large as past concerts.

“We normally have 200 people, but I think the rain is keeping people away,” said Stu Schrawder, entertainment coordinator.

Other events are scheduled at the park through December.

On Thursday, The Sunset Drum Circle will play from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Marina. The open air drum circle will feature both free-style drumming and percussion with Afro/Cuban flair. Anyone with a drum is welcome to join the group.

Enjoy Sunday Brunch on the Point from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 7. Patrons can bring their own brunch, or enjoy food prepared by The Glass Onion of Sunbury. The Ann Kerstetter Band will provide live music. It will be the last Sunday brunch of the season.

On Sept. 20, Friends of Shikellamy State Park will host a Fall Equinox Celebration complete with live music, food, workshops and various activities for the entire family at the Overlook from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Celebrate the Harvest Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 12 at the Marina with food and activities.

Enjoy the beauty that winter brings to the park while Caroling in the Park with friends and family from 6 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 11.

In addition to community events the Friends have plans for several park improvements, including a permanent stage to take advantage of the Overlook’s gentle slope.

“This is a natural amphitheater; if you stand at the top, the sound is amazing,” Schrawder said.

There are also plans to improve the abandoned building at the Marina.

The Susquehanna River Heartland Coalition for Environmental Studies will turn the old marina building into an environmental research and education center, according to H.W. Wieder. The building has been vacant for six years and housed several restaurants.

The building will be renovated to include classrooms, research facilities and office space. A 2,500 square feet addition is also planned. Costs are estimated to be between $2 and $2.5 million, Wieder said. The coalition is currently reviewing architectural firms. Wieder hopes construction will begin by spring.
