Passenger grabs wheel in crash
MIDDLEBURG — A Northumberland man was committed to Snyder County Prison in lieu of $15,000 cash bail Saturday after allegedly being involved in a 1 a.m. crash, hitting his 17-year-old girlfriend in the vehicle and urinating in public, according to state police at Selinsgrove.
Trooper Thomas Leib reported Benjamin Allen Trego, 23, of 532 Third St., Northumberland, was highly intoxicated while he was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Jacquelyn Norris, 19, of Sunbury.
According to Leib, Norris was driving along State Route 104 when a highly intoxicated Trego began grabbing the steering wheel on the vehicle.
He allegedly grabbed the steering wheel again on State Route 522 in Franklin Township, this time causing the vehicle to veer out of its lane, police reported.
According to Leib, Norris was unable to prevent the vehicle from crashing. Police also reported that Leib hit his 17-year-old girlfriend, who was also in the car at the time of the accident.
Another passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash was Tiffany Jo Barge, 19, of Selinsgrove, police reported.
Norris reportedly pulled into the rear parking lot of the Snyder County 911 Center to obtain help. Selinsgrove Borough Officer Scott Grove and Trooper Monty Anders reportedly found Trego urinating in the middle of the 911 center’s parking lot and ordered him to the ground. Police reported Trego resisted arrest and was taken into custody.
Trego was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Jeffrey Mensch in Mifflinburg in accordance with domestic violence laws for allegedly hitting the 17-year-old girl.
According to police, Trego was charged with recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, open lewdness, harassment and public drunkenness.
Bicycle found
SUNBURY — A Schwinn 10-speed bicycle was found along Shikellamy Ave. near North Fourth Street at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, according to Trooper Kevin Haines.
The bicycle’s owner should contact State Police at Stonington at 286-5601 and provide a description and/or proof of ownership.
Hit and run
UPPER MAHANTANGO TOWNSHIP — No one was injured when a Pitman man drove hit a stop sign and drove through someone’s yard along Mill Road, near the intersection of Route 4016, according to state police at Stonington.
Trooper Marc C. Yemzow reported that John R. Rothermel, 21, was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado and impacted a stop sign while attempting to turn right onto Route 4016.
Rothermel then allegedly caused damages when he drove through a private property yard, police reported.
Rothermel fled the scene without making proper notifications to property owners, police said.
The crash was discovered by state police at Stonington during the course of an ongoing investigation from Northumberland County involving the same vehicle.
Rothermel will be cited with various traffic violations, including careless driving and failing to make proper notifications to property owners, police reported.
Adam G. Schwartz, 24, of Hegins, was reportedly a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the incidents.
