SELINGSGROVE — An 81-year-old woman sustained minor injuries after her son allegedly shot at her in the living room of their Selinsgrove home. After firing the shot, a brief police standoff ensued.

Also in the room at the time of the shooting was an infant, Michael Bender, and his father, Anthony Bender. Both escaped injury.

According to Selinsgrove police, the suspect, William Allen Ludwig, was charged with one count of attempted criminal homicide, two counts of aggravated felony assault, one count of misdemeanor simple assault with a firearm, four counts of recklessly endangering another person, and one count of felony terroristic threats.

Police were called at 5:22 p.m. Sunday night after shots were fired inside 204 S. Front St. on the Isle of Que.

William Ludwig, 61, who was described as being highly intoxicated, became enraged during an argument and fired a .357 magnum handgun at his mother, according to Selinsgrove Police Chief Thomas Garlock.

Mary Lugwig was reaching for the phone to call the police when a bullet grazed her forearm and struck an oak cabinet. The round fragmented and grazed her forehead. The fragments then ricocheted and struck the chair she was sitting in.

She refused immediate medical treatment, police said.

The infant’s mother, Alison Drumheller, was outside at the time of the shooting and was able to get her son and his father out of the house after the shots were fired.

They fled across the street to the river to await police.

When the police arrived at the scene, William Ludwig gathered three rifles along with ammunition and placed them near the front door, police said. He also placed a rifle near the back door.

According to police, William Ludwig told his mother that he was going to use the weapons against police and then take his own life.

Mary Ludwig, along with police officers, negotiated a surrender from inside the home. Her son was taken into custody outside of the residence at 5:37 p.m., 15 minutes after police arrival.

William Ludwig also had a previous minor injury, Garlock said, which was not sustained during the altercation.

The gray-haired Ludwig was seated in the rear of a police cruiser, covering his face with shackled hands, awaiting formal charges at the Selinsgrove police station Sunday evening.

He was transported to the office of Magisterial District Judge Jeffrey Mensch, in Mifflinburg, for preliminary arraignment.

The home, which faces the waterfront, was cordoned off with police tape while police gathered evidence and secured the scene.

The crime scene was processed by the Pennsylvania State Police Records and Identification section of Troop F, Montoursville, and assisted by state police at Selinsgrove. The Selinsgrove police were assisted by Sunbury City Police. The Susquehanna Valley Regional SWAT Team was requested, but canceled on route upon apprehension of the suspect.
