CHAPMAN TOWNSHIP — Three horses were killed along Route 11 early Sunday morning after being hit by two tractor trailers, state police at Selinsgrove reported.
According to police reports, James D. Kreider, 51, of Hershey, was driving a 1997 International Harvester south on Route 11, just south of Chapman Hollow Road, when five horses wandered onto the roadway and into the path of the tractor trailer.
At that time, Anthony D. Persad, 28, of Millville, was driving a 2000 Mack Truck along the roadway.
According to police, both vehicles struck the horses, three of which were killed. The remaining two horses were uninjured, reported Trooper Craig V. Magnuson.
When the Mack Truck collided with the horses, its fuel line was severed, causing a large amount of the liquid to spill from the tank.
The owner of the horses was determined to be Laura Beachel, of 6679 Chapman Hollow Road, Port Trevorton. She reportedly told police the horses had escaped from their pen earlier Sunday morning.
A Selinsgrove man then crashed into the three dead horses lying on Routes 11 and 15, 394 feet north of South Main Street, state police at Selinsgrove reported.
Jason M. Boschi, 28, was reportedly driving a 2006 Honda Civic when the vehicle hit one of the horses with its right front end, causing disabling damage to the car.
All three drivers were reportedly not injured and wearing seatbelts in the crash.
The accident occurred at 5:40 a.m. in Chapman Township, about 30 miles north of Harrisburg.
State police were assisted at the scene by Selinsgrove Borough Police Department, Port Trevorton Fire Company, PennDot and Northridge.
