MOUNT CARMEL — The Mount Carmel Area Athletic Alumni Association (MC4A) held its third annual membership meeting and scholarship awards drawing on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Lazarski’s Catering Service. Attending were members and students who applied for the scholarship awards drawing.
MC4A is a non-profit organization with the mission of providing scholarships for Mount Carmel Area students who have participated in a sport or supported interscholastic athletic programs while attending MCA, and in doing so establish a bond between graduates and current students.
Following the meeting, the scholarship awards drawing was held, in which five $1,000 scholarships were given out to the lucky winners of a lottery style drawing. The awards ceremony was hosted by Dan Ficca along with Robert Colahan and Director, Brian Bubnis. The applicants and their parents were welcomed and it was noted that 36 students had applied for the awards, which was up from last year.
This year, MC4A increased the number of scholarships to five. In 2009, it will increase to six because of the new Business Sponsorship program.
Charter members of the Business Sponsorship program are: Academy Sports Center, Beierschmitt & Associates, C. J. Lucas Funeral Home Inc., Family Home Medical, International Paper, Lazarski’s Catering Service, Newspring Industrial Corporation, Shimock’s Furniture, Star Inc., T & G Tax Accountants, Union National Bank, Jeff Kanezo – Web Master and R-Squared Consultants-Website specialists
The five $1,000 scholarship winners were the following college students:
Stephanie Fisher — a daughter of Joe and Marlene Fisher, Kulpmont, a senior at Penn State University, majoring in health policy administration and a minor in human development and family studies.
Nathan Morgan — a son of Harold and Marsha Morgan of Mount Carmel is a senior at Bloomsburg University, majoring in environmental science.

Josh Spieller — a son of Donald and Rosie Spieller, Kulpmont, is a junior at Bloomsburg University, majoring in finance.

Congratulations went out to the winners and all who applied.
The applicants were encouraged to continue to do well in furthering their education and reminded that they could apply again next year if they continue to meet the qualifications. Before the ceremony, food and refreshments were available.
