20-year-old dies in crash
ROCKEFELLER TOWNSHIP — A young Sunbury man was killed in a crash early this morning along Plum Creek Road just east of the intersection of Carroll Road in Rockefeller Township.

Open house at MCA

MOUNT CARMEL — Mount Carmel Area Junior-Senior High School will hold its open house for all students in grades seven to 12 at 6:30 p.m. Monday, at which time a mock schedule will begin. Parents are asked to bring their student’s schedule so that they may follow it as the bell rings for each period. This item was published incorrectly in Sunday’s edition.

MCA elementary orientation today

MOUNT CARMEL — Orientation for students in kindergarten through sixth grade at Mount Carmel Area Elementary will be held at 6 p.m. today. Orientation for children in a.m. and extended day pre-k is set for 10:30 a.m. today, and for students in p.m. pre-k, 1:15 p.m.

Family Reunion scheduled

New times at Shamokin Area

COAL TOWNSHIP — Parents of students at Shamokin Area School District are reminded to note the new student times for the 2008-09 school year. The instructional day for students in the elementary and annex buildings begins at 8:15 a.m. with dismissal at 3 p.m. Middle-high school students begin at 7:45 a.m. and will be dismissed at 2:32 p.m.

CCD classes starting at Divine Redeemer

MOUNT CARMEL — New and first-grade students from Divine Redeemer of Our Lady of Mount Carmel churches who have not yet registered for CCD (religious education) can contact Karen Harris at 339-1317. Classes will start on Sept. 21 and 22.

Veterans assistance coming to Sunbury

SUNBURY — A representative of the Governors’ Veterans Outreach and Assistance Center will visit the Sunbury Municipal Building, 225 Market St., on from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4. Free help and advice will be available for veterans and family members.

The representative will provide more information about these and other federal/state veteran’s benefits and/or make reference to another service agency that can provide further assistance. Bring a separation document (DD Form 214) or other proof of service to the outreach location. If the document is lost, misplaced or damaged, help will be provided to replace it.

Veterans or surviving spouses of veterans who have wartime service may be eligible for a pension from the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). A DVA pension is a low-income based program (based on a family’s yearly gross income). Income levels are set by law and must be met to qualify. Another program called “aid and attendance” may be available for those in the care of another person or facility such as a nursing home or assisted living. Call the DVA about eligibility requirements.
