Practical joker still at large

ASHLAND — Is Ashland a one-horse town? If you asked that question of Warren “Nick” Lane on Wednesday, his answer would have been “Neigh!”
The reason for Lane’s equine response? A quick glance in front of his home at 120 E. Centre St. early Wednesday morning would easily answer that question. When Lane woke up and looked outside, he found four hobby horses hitched outside his home preparing to eat the flowers in the planter near the curb.
“I woke up and let my dogs out in the yard. The dogs always run to the front of the house and they started barking rather furiously,” said Lane. “I usually get upset when they’re barking, so when I walked out front and saw those four hobby horses hitched to my hitching post, I just completely burst out laughing.”
Lane immediately went inside to get his wife, Diane, to see the sight.
“I got my wife out of bed to come down and take a look at them,” said Lane.
“At least it started our day off with a chuckle,” said Diane Lane, laughing.
Lane, who is the borough tax colector and owns a real estate business, installed the hitching post about 10 years ago, though not without some resistance from the borough when he made the request.
“I had a heck of a time getting that hitch in,” he said.
The question now remains who would have abandoned four good hobby horses at his curb.
“I have no idea who would have done it. So if anyone is missing their hobby horses, please contact me,” Lane said with a smile.
Lane has two possible suspects in mind who would have pulled this practical joke. He will be checking into it.
The horses remained hitched during the day as people drove by with confused looks at the four horses line up in a row, all hitched individually. Lane planned to remove the horses by this evening since Thursday is street-sweeping day for the south side of Centre Street, being concerned not only about their welfare, but also whether he would receive a street-sweeping violations for each horse, which is something he wouldn’t want to be nagged about.
