Police Blotter: DUI


DUI

ATLAS — Joseph T. McGinley, 44, of 406 N. Grape St., Mount Carmel, is charged by Mount Carmel Township Patrolman Matthew Filarski with two counts of driving under the influence and one count of careless driving following a traffic stop at 3:45 a.m. July 7 in the parking lot of Turkey Hill, Route 61. McGinley is accused of nearly striking a police cruiser before he was pulled over by officers. Police said he exhibited physical signs of intoxication and failed field sobriety testing. His blood alcohol content was .181 percent, police said.

The charges were filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael F. Mychak, Mount Carmel. McGinley is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Oct. 8.

Theft


COAL TOWNSHIP — James Mason, 28, of Coal Township, reported a red and white Honda CRF 450 dirt bike which stolen from the rear of 1505 Pulaski Ave. Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call Coal Township police at 644-0333.

Scattering rubbish

SHAMOKIN — Mary J. Sheesley, 60, of 339 Middle Road, Apt. C., Elysburg, was cited by Patrolman William J. Zalinski with scattering rubbish for allegedly throwing two empty iced tea containers onto the parking lot at Stephen Chowka Funeral Home, 114 N. Shamokin St., at 2:26 p.m. Aug. 7.

Reckless driving

MOUNT CARMEL — Jason L. Honicker, 28, of 86 Main St., Locust Gap, was charged by Cpl. Chris Buhay with driving under the influence, reckless endangerment and reckless driving following a traffic stop Aug. 10 on the first block of West Second Street.

Police accused Honicker of driving through the borough at a high rate of speed and almost hitting a pedestrian that was crossing a roadway. Police said he refused blood testing.

The charges were filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael F. Mychak. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 6.

Simple assault

SHAMOKIN — A 15-year-old city male was charged by Patrolman Nathan Rhodes with simple assault and harassment for allegedly hitting his mother in the arm with a skateboard at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at his residence. The charges were filed with Northumberland County Juvenile Court.

Lottery scam

KULPMONT — Borough police are reminding residents to be cautious of lottery and mail scams. Police recently investigated a Canadian lottery scam where a resident received a check in the mail, along with instructions to transfer money back as a tax payment. Residents should not reply to any similar requests for information and/or money.

Burglary

MOUNT CARMEL — Mark D. Melnick, 20, of 41 W. Sixth St., Mount Carmel, is charged with burglary and related offenses for allegedly stealing a .357 Colt revolver, a box of ammunition and money from a residence at 46 N. Oak St. sometime between July 8 and July 11.

Melnick is also charged with criminal trespass, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and persons not allowed to possess firearms. He was committed to Northumberland County Prison on $20,000 bail and is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Michael F. Mychak on Friday.

PFA violation

KULPMONT — Allen E. Thompson, 41, of 333 E. Norwegian St., Pottsville, was charged by Trooper John J. Chapman, state police at Stonington, with indirect criminal contempt for allegedly violating a protection from abuse order July 25 by sending a threatening letter to Lisa Paul, of Kulpmont.

The charge was filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael F. Mychak, Mount Carmel.

Suspended license

MOUNT CARMEL — John E. Long, 32, of 529 E. Third St., Mount Camel, was charged by Patrolman Jason Drumheller with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and disorderly conduct following a traffic stop at 1:49 a.m. Aug. 7 at Fifth and Market streets.

Police said Long failed field sobriety testing and refused blood testing.

The charges were filed with Magisterial District Judge Michael F. Mychak. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 8.

Retail theft

KULPMONT — Devon Robert Smith, 22, of Kulpmont, was arrested Aug. 1 by Chief of Police Richard L. Wilson III at Turkey Hill for allegedly trying to steal a package of beef jerky. Smith was also charged with public drunkenness, police said.
