Picnic in the park
On Aug. 17, 2008, about the Market Street picnic. Sure, it is nice to take your girlfriend on a picnic someplace where it is really romantic. But why do you need to have a half a barrel of booze? Why have alcohol at a picnic? You don’t need the alcohol. What is the reason for it? I would like the answer to that one. Frog’s take: Why? Why not? I just didn’t want to see the fellow and his best gal get busted for public drunkenness. Anyway, maybe it was for his girlfriend.
The clairvoyant
You know what would be the greatest thing about Shamokin, I think? If they would get rid of the liquor store. You don’t need the booze in the town. You need the place cleaned up and looking half-decent to get business into the area so Shamokin doesn’t have to file for bankruptcy. Shamokin would be a nice, nice town if it would be cleaned up and would draw business opportunities into the area. Frog’s take: The liquor store has been out of Shamokin’s downtown for a few months now and, wow, has it ever spruced up the area — with another empty store front.
Curtain call
I am calling about the production of “Jekyll and Hyde” put on by the Anthracite Citizens Theatre (ACT) in Mount Carmel over the past weekend. It was a tremendous show full of suspense, drama and beautiful music. Mount Carmel and surrounding areas should be very proud of the talented people who put on such a professional show. A great big thank you to the director, cast, stage and lighting crews for a wonderful performance. Also, everyone should thank Ronnie Scicchitano for keeping ACT alive. I wish I could see it all over again.
A suggestion
Just a suggestion for the cat problem in Elysburg. Why not try to trap most of the cats or all of the cats if you possibly can, neuter them, and re-release them into the population? They will live out their lives the way they have been living out their lives, but they won’t be able to reproduce and, eventually, they will die off. Just a suggestion.
Cheap gas
Gas has been 20 cents cheaper in Danville than it has been in Elysburg. So, if you have to go that way, wait to get gas. It is worth your money.
Alternative heat
With the price of fuel oil so high, what is the best source of heat to convert to? Is there any that we can use with our existing radiators?
Abandoned cars
Why don’t the Coal Township police get after abandoned cars the way Trevorton did? Some cars sit in the street and they never move for months, taking up parking spaces.
Catch and release
People humanly trap stray cats and get them spayed or neutered and rabies shots. PA P.E.T.S. can help you pay for this. The cats won’t reproduce, and will have rabies shots.
Helping hand
I just want to thank the nice husband and wife who came to my assistance at Knoebels Amusement Resort when my mother almost fell. Without your help, she would have definitely fallen.
Fire departments
Regarding the city financial problems, does the city really need six fire departments in a small town like that? There is another savings.
No stinking horses
Here is something for the Budweiser drinkers. How long do you think it is going to be before the foreign company tells Budweiser that we don’t need the horses? How much more Bud will you be drinking then? You better change to Yuengling.
Read it right
I am calling about the call in Monday’s paper about Coal Township’s population and was the correctional institution included. If you read the story right, it said right in there that it was included.

" Shamokin used to be a nice clean town to live people cleaned up after themselves and had more respect for others and their property. We need to start cleaning up again to keep good people here and draw in good people not the riff- raff that's too lazy to take care of their own families and property. The future is in your hands so stop placing the blame on others and get Shamokin out of it's poor state. Yes you ! Go out and pick the garbage up around your neighborhood, clean the hillbilly furniture off your porch -get pride "
Cat Plan wrote on Aug 21, 2008 10:53 AM:
" Maybe we do need stricter controls on cats but that does not mean harm to them. Cats should all have be registered, tagged, and neutered. It is very expensive but if different organizations would spend more money on neutering and less on advertising we could get a couple unwanted litters from being born. Elysburg cats should be caught and neutered and if a couple vets could give some free time and supplies it could happen.
Donation cans could be set around to collect for supplies for neutering. It's the only way to break the vicious circle and stop unwanted cats from roaming our areas and reproducing. "

" Start cleaning our area up beginning with the foul language being used freely on our streets and public places were children hear it and think it's a norm of society. We cant expect public figures such as police officers to be responsible (they have enough to do)we need to start at home!!!!!!
Thats right start correcting your children, ask your foul mouth family and friends to tone it down and keep the dirty language away from those who it affends and innocent children. Thanks for listening "

" I've been wondering why nothing is done about the loitering on oak street, near 4th street, mt carmel, after 9 pm. It goes on late, you hear screaming, there's double parked cars, and now they are hanging in the alleys. Be considerate, please. "
