FASD week to be held at BU

BLOOMSBURG — Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Drug, Alcohol and Wellness Network (DAWN) and Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority are sponsoring events during Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Week, Sept. 8 to 14, to emphasize the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy.

The week’s events, presented in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Programs, include a seminar by Daniel Dubovsky, FASD specialist from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Kehr Union. The seminar is open to the public free of charge.

BU also will host a training event for professionals and service providers, sponsor an awareness ribbon campaign and provide information on FASD prevention and intervention.

Gov. Ed Rendell proclaimed FASD Awareness Week to draw attention to serious physical, mental, behavioral and learning disabilities that can affect children whose mothers use alcohol during pregnancy. For more information on FASD Awareness Week activities, contact BU’s DAWN Office at (570) 389-4963 or the Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Programs at (717) 783-8200.
