Lower Anthracite confident as new campaign kicks off

MOUNT CARMEL — The new executive director for the United Way said the agency came close to meeting its 2007 fundraising goal, and knows it can be accomplished in 2008.

Jennifer Topolski offered the optimistic prediction as the Lower Anthracite Region United Way kicked off its 2008 campaign with a luncheon Tuesday afternoon at Mattucci’s Willow Cafe.

The United Way hopes to raise $50,000 in order to assist its 11 member agencies in the greater Shamokin, Mount Carmel and Elysburg areas and into the Susquehanna Valley.

“We came close last year and I am very confident we can do it this year with a little extra work,” Topolski told the gathering of about 25 people. “We have so many agencies here, and the money we raise will help them all.”

With that, Topolski talked about the mission statement of the campaign: “To increase the organized capacity of all people in Coal Township, Elysburg, Kulpmont, Locust Gap, Marion Heights, Mount Carmel, Paxinos, Shamokin, and Trevorton communities to improve our quality of life by being accountable to one another.”

Topolski also hopes to make the cause of the United Way more visible this year, as it did with the Stuff the Bus campaign earlier this summer, in which school supplies were collected and distributed to needy students in six area schools.

“The Stuff The Bus campaign was successful, and I am proud of the work that we have done with that campaign, because it made ourselves more dedicated to the cause of the United Way,” Topolski said.

Topolski called on representatives of the member agencies to talk about their organizations.

One of the more moving speeches came from Bonnie and Elaine Yentsch, representing ARC of Northumberland County, who noted the agency’s work with mental health/mental retardation issues.

“The gifts that people give to the United Way will help with our campaign to continue that work,” Bonnie Yentsch said.

Peggy Reichenbach, director of the Central Susquehanna Valley Big Brothers/Big Sisters, talked about how her staff of two people serve the needs of youth in four counties.

“There are a lot of kids out there that are lost in the shuffle and all they need is a positive role model in their lives,” Reichenbach said. “It is just a way to get kids out of their environment, which sometimes is not a positive one.”

Other agencies being helped by the Lower Anthracite Region United Way include People for Progress, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Catholic Charities, Avenues, The American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Central Susquehanna Sight Services and Visiting Nurses Association.

Sandy Winhofer, director of the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce and a United Way board member, said not only money, but volunteers, are needed as well.

“People can donate money, or they can donate time. We are always looking for envelope stuffers for the campaign, or there are many jobs we can find for you,” she said.

For more information on how to help, contact the United Way at 644-1894. To mail a donation, send it to the Lower Anthracite Regional United Way, 2 E. Arch St., Suite 306, Shamokin, 17872.
