‘Lift Your Spirits’ group plans two dinner theater shows

POTTSVILLE — The Lift Your Spirits Performing Arts group will be taking to the stage in two upcoming dinner theater performances in Pottsville and Millersburg.

POTTSVILLE — The Lift Your Spirits Performing Arts group will be taking to the stage in two upcoming dinner theater performances in Pottsville and Millersburg.

The first show will be Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Masonic Building in Pottsville with the Academy Awards mystery spoof called “Murder at the Tonylou Awards,” showing the intriguing behind the scenes world of Hollywood.

Penned by Tony Schwarz and Marylou Ambrose, the show takes place at “Coal Palace,” the home of the Tonylou Award show. Hosted by T.J Hardcastle, whose parents “timely” accident allowed him to become the head of Hardcastle Productions. Always a night of surprises, the list of stars is a large one. Celia B. De Milo, the movie mogul, will be there with her newest young male “discovery,” Claude-Jean Van Dumbe, Funky Brewster teen star of the Broadway hit, “Annie Goes Through Puberty,” Monty Carlo, noted Latin star looking to break into American movies any way possible. Will Angelina Canoli,TJ’s wife, take home another award? How many feelings will be bruised by comedienne and gossip columnist Constance Gabbles, who will be doing interviews that night. What about the special award that Lorna Lush, former star now turned, mmm, expert at intoxication? What will T.J.’s jealous sister M.J. bring to the awards? Always a night of surprises, tonight’s awards are sure to be one that will not soon be forgotten.

The audience will be asked to keep their eyes and ears open because someone will truly be awarded for what they have done. and it’s up to the audience to solve the crime. Prizes will be awarded to the first people who correctly guess the murderer and motive.

What the audience can expect in participating in this murder mystery is fun the minute they walk in the door. Doors open at 4:15 p.m. At 5 p.m., a roast beef dinner will be served. As dinner is ending, the stars should begin to arrive for the award presentations. Bring an autograph book and a smile.

The second dinner theater event will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Millersburg with a different murder mystery called “Dealt a Deadly Hand: Murder at the Pocono Royale Casino,” which is spoofs the film “Casablanca” and the American dream of winning the jackpot.

Also written by Schwarz and Ambrose, the show takes place at Rick’s club, the first legal gambling casino in the Poconos. Rick dreams of striking it rich, but two crafty Native Americans try to claim the land. To add to his problems, Rick’s gold-digging ex-wife Lola shows up. Throw in a two-faced lawyer, an Australian “Croc Chaser” with bad luck, and two little old ladies on a gambling mission, and “making a killing” takes on a whole new meaning.

Will the Native Americans take over the casino? Will the Croc Chaser win back his farm? Will the Portabella sisters find their missing g-string? Will the lawyer decide how to play his cards? Will Lola and Rick get back together for richer or poorer? And will Rick ever be cured of his Bogart complex?

The audience should keep their eyes and ears open because someone will cash in his or her chips tonight, and it’s up to the audience to solve the crime. Prizes will be awarded to the first people who correctly guess the murder and motive.

Doors open at 5:15 p.m. for the audience to get the chance to mingle with the cast as they drop hints about themselves and the show and provide a chance to ask questions. At 6 p.m., the attendees will enjoy a chicken dinner while the cast keeps a low profile. The main show starts after dinner about 7 p.m.
