HUMMELS WHARF — In the wake of the first business, Red Robin, having opened its doors at the new Monroe Marketplace on Monday, three other businesses are set to open their doors in the coming days.
Kohl’s Department Store becomes the first store to open for business in the 700,000-square-foot marketplace along Routes 11 and 15, with the ribbon cutting ceremony today, officially opening the store for business. The store has been designated an environmentally-friendly store, pre-certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.
The opening of the Selinsgrove store marks the 43rd location for the department store chain in Pennsylvania, and puts Kohl’s on track to eventually have 1,000 stores in operation.
In addition to the environmental impact, the new store will have an economic impact, creating approximately an additional 130 jobs in the Selinsgrove area.
The store features such exclusive brands as Simply Vera Vera Wang, Abbey Dawn, ELLE, FILA Sport, Food Network and many other national brands such as Levi’s, Carter’s and Cuisnart.
“In addition to the jobs, Kohl’s also brings a commitment to being a good neighbor with its Kohl’s Cares for Kids program that supports health and educational opportunities for children in communities nationwide,” said Kristen Helgeson, public relations representative for Kohl’s Department Stores. “We offer a comfortable and convenient shopping environment where customers can outfit themselves, their families and their homes for a great value, complete with charge cards, gift cards, gift registries, a generous return policy, shopping carts that double as strollers, centralized checkouts and extended store hours.”
The electronics superstore Best Buy, opening on Thursday, will be the second major store to open in the plaza.
The store will feature the latest in consumer electronics, everything from flat screen TVs to mobile phones, computers, CDs, DVDs and more.
The store will have a special ribbon cutting ceremony at 6 p.m. Thursday, with the first 100 customers in the store receiving $20 gift cards, and a non-profit organization receiving a $10,000 donation from the company.
In the wake of the stores opening up this week, another anchor store at Monroe Marketplace, Giant, announced today it will open for business with a special ceremony at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8.
The newly-built 76,000-square-foot store will replace the existing Giant at 1 Baldwin Blvd., Shamokin Dam, which will close at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7.
Joe Cardone, store manager, said the 24-hour supermarket will employ approximately 250 full- and part-time employees, more than double the number of associates now employed at the other location.
“Giant is all about finding ways to save our customers both time and money,” Cardone said. “Whether it’s a gas station just outside our doors or our combination of quality, selection and savings, we hope our customers will think of us as the smartest choice for value both inside the store and at our fuel pumps.”
That value will start with the first Giant Gas Extra Rewards program, with customers receiving 10-cents-off per gallon of gas for every $100 spent at the store.
The new location also features a free Wi-Fi cafe where customers can get work done and enjoy a cup of coffee at the in-store Savor Coffeeshop or at the Marketplace Cafe, and will have a special section devoted to natural and organic products, a drug store, and the interactive Shopping Solutions kiosks that will enable customers to get personalized BonusCard savings, locate an item, place a party tray order or access recipes.
In addition to these stores, the marketplace will also be the new home for such stores as Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Dress Barn, Lane Bryant, Michaels, PetSmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Starbucks, Famous Footwear, Staples and Susquehanna Bank. Once completed, officials believe approximately 220 full-time jobs and 600 to 800 part-time jobs will be added to the local economy.
