LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP — The Mount Carmel Red Tornadoes did everything right in their 47-0 shutout over Loyalsock to stay undefeated.
They outthrew the Lancers, outran them and played better defense.
The Red Tornadoes shut down the Lancer passing attack by holding Shane Carey to just 23 passing yards. Carey only completed 3-of-13 passes and threw an interception. Carey had a string of six straight incompletions through the second and third quarters.
“We wanted to shut down Shane Carey and the passing attack,” Mount Carmel coach Mike Brennan said. “Paul Babinsky and the defensive staff did a great job. We were prepared for both (run and passing game).”
The Lancers stopped Mount Carmel’s initial drive on a fourth-and-six, but they weren’t able to capitalize. Mount Carmel then scored on its next sixstraight possessions, not being stopped until Loyalsock forced a punt with 4:57 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Mount Carmel scored its seventh touchdown on their following possession with 36 seconds left in the game.
Loyalsock’s Stephen Stopper gained 63 yards on the ground on 18 carries, but Loyalsock couldn’t seem to get the ball moving at all in the game. The Lancers failed to convert nine third-down attempts and were just 1-for-3 on fourth down conversions.
“We were just really inconsistent,” Loyalsock quarterback Carey said.
“We were able to run the ball tonight, but our passing game wasn’t there.”
Defensively, the Lancers couldn’t stop either Mount Carmel’s aerial attack or the running game. Red Tornadoes quarterback Marcus Wasilewski threw for 162 yards and three touchdowns.
“I think as the year goes on he’ll continue to make plays for us,” Brennan said. “He’s an offensive leader and we’re certainly glad to be able to give him enough throws tonight. We haven’t really been getting him throws a lot lately.”
On the ground though, Mount Carmel was just as effective against Loyalsock’s defense. The Red Tornadoes had 241 total rushing yards from nine different players. Four different players scored on the ground for Mount Carmel.
Three of the four rushing touchdowns were from 20 or more yards out.
“Our kids run the ball hard and they’re good, talented running backs,” Brennan said. “This is a very unselfish group. They don’t care who’s running it, who’s catching it, as long as we’re winning football games and getting better every week. That’s all they seem to care about.”
Through the air, Mount Carmel had five different receivers make a catch.
Mount Carmel’s Matt Moroz had 104 receiving yards and a touchdown while Justin Pellowski had two touchdowns on his only two receptions.
“Defensively, I thought we played very well,” Brennan said. “Offensively, I thought we got the passing game moving a little bit. I was pleased with all aspects. I felt pretty good about our overall team effort.”
Mount Carmel didn’t allow any big runs from Loyalsock. The longest run any Lancer had was a 10-yard run by Stephen Stopper. Mount Carmel was able to put pressure onto Carey, forcing him to make throws. Of his three completions, his longest was 11 yards. However, Lancer receivers were dropping passes in open coverage, which proved costly in not being able to drive downfield.
