Make a Difference Day headlines a full month of October celebrations

October celebrations include National Food Bank Week and Red Ribbon Week. The days to celebrate are World Smile, Do Something Nice, Evaluate Your Life, National Candy Corn and, of course, Make A Difference Day. Two of these events are celebrated locally.
Red Ribbon Week, held Oct. 23 to 31, unites the county for drug-free communities through educational programming. Display your red ribbon in support.
Make A Difference Day is a signature event in Schuylkill County. Last year, 1,719 individuals and 82 groups registered to help a reported 4,510 individuals, 54 organizations, 36 families, four towns, two foreign countries and a countless number of furry friends. Those are huge numbers. Still, many acts of kindness weren’t able to be recorded and tracked.
This office is the official Make A Difference Day Coordinating Center. As such, it tracks the numbers of participants and beneficiaries. This may not seem important, but it is. These numbers are used for the annual awards reception, when reporting to dignitaries and when applying for a regional or national award. You may not be aware, but the residents of Schuylkill County received state, national and Encore awards in the past.
Statistics are also used to track trends, such as how the national climate influences the kind of projects created. With this information, we can guide groups or the business community looking for a meaningful project to a worthy, but lesser-known organization that may not have benefited from the event in the past.
Some groups don’t register because they participate strictly for humanitarian reasons and don’t want to be considered for one of the annual awards through this office. If that’s the case, check off that box on the form and we’ll respect your wishes. But please register your project.
There are only three weeks until Make A Difference Day. Now is the time to register your project. It’s easy. One-page registrations forms are available online for your convenience at www.republicanherald.com or through this office. The completed form can be mailed, e-mailed or faxed. If you can’t come up with an idea for that special project, we can provide you with a list of easy and fun projects. But don’t delay; time is slipping away.
The following is a list of received registrations as of Sept. 26. (If you registered and your group isn’t listed, contact me. It may have gotten waylaid by the fax fairies):
