Veterans Benefits Expo to be held
SELINSGROVE — The inaugural SUN Area Veterans Benefits Expo will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6631.
The expo will bring together local, state and federal agencies that offer services to veterans and their families. Representatives from the state of Pennsylvania Veterans Affairs Office will be on hand to talk to veterans and family members about VA benefits and eligibility requirements. Other agencies will be available to provide information as well.
Scheduled to appear is the Freightliner “Ride of Pride” truck honoring veterans, POWs and MIAs. Manufactured at the Freightliner heavy-duty truck manufacturing plant in Cleveland, N.C., the fully customized truck features designs of the American flag, a bald eagle, the POW-MIA emblem and symbols from each military division, decaled over the orange cab.
The event is for veterans of all ages and for anyone who served in any military branch, including the National Guard and the reserves. It is also for veterans’ spouses and children.
Sobriety checkpoints announced
HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania State Police will begin a yearlong program this week aimed at taking intoxicated motorists off the road, acting commissioner Frank E. Pawlowski announced today.
Each of the 15 regional state police troops will conduct a random sobriety checkpoint within its troop area every weekend for the next year. Troops will also promote anti-DUI enforcement activities with municipal police departments.
Silver Bowl to mark 75th anniversary
MOUNT CARMEL — The Mount Carmel Area School District will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Silver Bowl football stadium in conjunction with homecoming at the MCA vs. Jersey Shore football game Friday.
Homecoming and anniversary activities will include a parade which will form at Second and Oak Streets in Mount Carmel at 5:30 p.m. The parade will travel south on Oak Street from Second Street to Fourth Street, west on Fourth Street to Maple Street, north on Maple Street to Third Street and west on Third Street to the Silver Bowl.
The Kulpmont Cougars and Mount Carmel Jets cheerleaders and football players have been invited to participate in the parade.
Homecoming floats sponsored by the classes at the junior senior high school will also proceed in the parade and will be judged upon arrival at the stadium. This year’s float theme is “The Many Holidays We Celebrate.”
From 5 to 7 p.m., the Mount Carmel Area School District, in conjunction with the Mount Carmel Area Education Foundation, will sponsor a Silver Bowl party at the stadium. Tickets cost $5 each and will be sold to benefit the efforts of the foundation.
Tickets include a roasted pork sandwich, homemade bean soup, beverage and dessert. A maximum of 400 tickets will be sold. They can be purchased at the superintendent’s office Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Fridays 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
T-shirts commemorating the 75th anniversary will be on sale, as well as an anniversary edition book of football stats.
Those wearing a Silver Bowl t-shirt to the game will receive $1 off game admission price.
