Municipalities awarded recycling grants
HARRISBURG — State Rep. Robert E. Belfanti Jr.’s office announced Monday that Coal Township will receive $8,110 and Shamokin $4,768 in recycling performance grants issued by the state Department of Environmental Protection.
The grant amounts are based on the population of the two municipalities, as well as the tons of material recycled in each municipality in 2006.
In 2006, businesses, households, schools and other organizations in Shamokin recycled more than 483 tons of material; more than 864 tons of material was recycled in Coal Township.
“These grants are awarded by the state on top of other funding that is available to maintain municipal recycling programs,” Belfanti said. “The recycling performance grants act as incentive for municipalities to improve their recycling even more. In addition to being good for the environment, recycling has become an important part of the economy in many communities.”
Belfanti said Pennsylvania’s recycling industry includes more than 3,240 recycling and reuse businesses and organizations that generate more than $18.4 billion in gross annual sales and provide jobs for more than 81,300 people. Recycling and reuse businesses in the state contribute more than $305 million in state revenues.
Pennsylvania recycling programs supply industry with more than 4.7 million tons of scrap commodities such as metals, paper, glass, plastics, wood, organics and other materials each year.

Council puts out call for artists
SHAMOKIN — The Northumberland County Council For the Arts Gallery Committee is calling on local artists to help support the county career and arts center Fine Art Gallery by donating one or two pieces of quality, original art for the Holiday Art Auction.
The silent auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, and end at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19. There will be a reception for the artists from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21.
The auction is the only major source of income for the gallery. Money raised is used to maintain, improve and promote the gallery. The committee hopes local artists who have exhibited or plan to exhibit in the gallery will help support it by donating to the auction. Artists who donate to the auction will be invited to participate in a special exhibition next year.
Works donated must be framed and wired for hanging. All donations must be submitted by Friday, Nov. 14. For more information and to arrange to make a donation please call 672-0319.
