MOUNT CARMEL — All season long, Mount Carmel Area has thrived by living in the present.
It’s been take care of business this week, worry about the future one game at a time.
Friday, after a 61-10 Heartland Conference crossover thrashing of Jersey Shore on a night when the school celebrated the 75th anniversary of the storied Silver Bowl, Tornadoes’ head coach Mike Brennan offered his team a chance to at least glimpse at the future.
He told them that, with their seventh victory without a defeat, they probably earned themselves at least one home playoff game when the District 4 Class AA postseason tournament rolls around.
Then it was back to business as usual, warning them that a very good Lewisburg team, one that also sports an unbeaten record after seven weeks, would require their total concentration.
“At some point, you start to think more about the postseason,” Brennan said. “But right now, you’re happy to be where you are.
“They have to be aware that we have a mission now. We’re on the downhill stretch of the season.”
The victory, like so many Red Tornado victories of the past in that same Silver Bowl, encompassed every aspect of winning football.
Special teams and defense played as much a role as Mount Carmel’s powerful offense.
Freshman Meyrick Lamb returned a first-quarter punt 72 yards for a touchdown after taking a reverse handoff from Matt Moroz, who fielded the punt. Junior Justin Pellowski — described by Brennan as a “playmaker” — returned the second-half kickoff a school-record 99 yards, and also scored on a 3-yard run and a 80-yard pass connection with quarterback Marcus Wasilewski.
There were two other long plays, a 47-yard Wasilewski-to-Matt Koveleski touchdown pass and an 87-yard scoring run by Julius Demetrius, one of two touchdowns he scored on the night.
Also scoring were Dave DeMarco on an 8-yard run, and Mike Sinopoli on 3-yard run.
Three of the touchdowns — Pellowski’s short run, Demetrius’ 87-yarder and Sinopoli’s 3-yarder — were set up by interceptions by Sean McCollum, Jared Morgan and Matt Dietz, respectively.
“For this to happen, you have to get great special teams play and returns,” Brennan said. “And tonight we had that.”
For their part, the Red Tornadoes defense only allowed three points all night, that came when Shore’s standout kicker Eli Skinner booted a 20-yard field goal in the second quarter. The Bulldogs’ other points came on the final play of regulation in the fourth quarter when offensive lineman Aaron Reidell picked up a fumble by a Shore runner in his own backfield and rumbled 84 yards for his team’s only touchdown.
“This team has a special bond,” Brennan said. “The kids overall are playing very good.”
