Local grads achieving collegiate success

Back to school in fall means back to college athletics for many area graduates.

Student athletes are having success on the gridiron, the soccer field, the field hockey turf and the volleyball court.

With apologies to everyone else, no one has had a better season through the first six weeks of the college football than Dan Latorre and his Bloomsburg Huskies.

The junior quarterback has attempted every pass for the seventh-ranked team in the nation. Latorre’s completion percentage is just a shade under 50%, but he has thrown for nine touchdowns and only two interceptions while wracking up 748 yards.

Latorre, a Southern Columbia graduate, has also been a valuable threat with his legs for Bloomsburg with 171 total yards on 42 attempts and another four touchdowns. This all has added up to a 6-0 start for the Huskies.

Kevin Bolinsky, a North Schuylkill grad, is mirroring the success of the Spartans with his own individual accomplishments on the defensive line at Kutztown University. Through six weeks in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Bolinsky leads the Golden Bears in tackles with 40 (18 solo, 22 assists) from his starting defensive tackle position. He’s also made three tackles for a loss, one pass break up, one pass defended and one fumble recovery. The Golden Bears are 2-4 overall, 1-2 PSAC.

Southern Columbia’s Bob Admire has been battling injuries at the University of Maine, but Admire has still played in three games for the Black Bears, recording eight tackles and one tackle for a loss.

Drew Letcavage, a Mount Carmel area grad, has taken well to the position change to linebacker for Wilkes University. He leads the Colonels with 47 tackles (24 solo, 23 assists) and six tackles for loss. Letcavage also has two forced fumbles for the Colonels.

Jake Shinskie is also on the Colonels, playing in three games with two tackles.

Not too far away, Matt Rhodes is busy making a name for himself at King’s College. He also leads his team in tackles with 32, with 13 against Delaware Valley.

Matt Koziol is playing his senior year for the Susquehanna University Crusaders. Koziol has caught two passes for 25 yards and one has one tackle in three games for the Crusaders.

On the volleyball court, Tara Bregensir, a Lourdes graduate, is making the most of her time at Southern Connecticut State University. The Owls’ senior has played in 16 games with 22 kills.

Another Lourdes volleyball player, Katherine Pazamickas, has played in 15 games for Lycoming College.

Moving to the soccer field, Shamokin Area alum Julissa Reed is second on the team with 10 points for the Wilkes’ women’s soccer team. She’s scored four goals and has two assists for the 5-6-1 Colonels.

Rich Chesney at Lebanon Valley has played in 11 games, starting four, at defense and midfield for the Flying Dutchmen.

Lourdes’ alum Mike Buckwash has one goal in eight games for King’s men’s soccer.

Line Mountain’s Lauren Lansberry, a senior at Delaware Valley, has two goals and two assists in 13 games.

St. Joseph’s University sophomore and Southern Columbia grad Kevin Rhoades has played 106 minutes for the Hawks.

Bloomsburg’s Betsy Renn, a Line Mountain grad, has one goal in 10 games for the 11-1 Huskies’ field hockey squad.

Best of luck to all the athletes for the remainder of their seasons.
