CATAWISSA R.R. - Muncy came into Southern Columbia with an outside shot at catching the Tigers for the Pennsylvania Heartland Athletic Conference Division II title. The Indians would have needed to beat Southern, and then hope the Tigers would lose their final two games while winning both of theirs.

Southern never let them get to Point B on that schematic.

Kayla Lavella scored 23 points and Mackenzie Clark 11 as the Tigers (17-2, 12-0) clinched the division outright by methodically pulling away for a 51-36 win over the Indians (14-6, 9-3) Tuesday.

The Tigers moved the ball around well and shot 50 percent from the floor (18-for-36) and overcame 24 turnovers.

LaVella scored 13 points in the first half, and Southern got solid performances from her supporting cast all the way around. For example, Sam Fraley didn't score a point, took only one shot in fact, but had six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

"We have three or four girls who are all kind of good in different areas for us," said Southern coach JoEllen Gallinot. "Mackenzie Clark and Sam Fraley will really take care of the ball for us, Kayla will look for her shot and with Danielle (Mowery), I never have to worry about her defense."

Southern opened with an 11-8 first quarter and gradually built the lead to nine (25-16) at halftime and 14 (37-23) after three quarters.

"I think our strength is our defense," Gallinot said. "We've been continually giving people a hard time with our zones. We've been real successful with our 3-2 in making people think the middle is wide open, and then someone is there because we're quick enough to fill that space.

"Tonight we went to a 2-3 early in the game because number 42 (Muncy's Courtney Ebner) gave us trouble up there, and we did a really nice job with it. We almost got in a little foul trouble near the end. We usually go about eight or nine girls deep though, so we can run at other teams and I can give the girls breathers."

Ebner scored just three points and they came early in the game.

Muncy's Jordan Jones scored 13 points and had five steals to lead the Indians.

"I think we're seeded about fifth right now in the district," said Gallinot. "Mount Carmel's the team to beat and I know Sayre is a very good team. What I think is neat is that between mount Carmel, Line Mountain, Lourdes and Shamokin, all of our teams around here are really making some noise."

Game Summary

MUNCY (36) - Good 2 2-2 6, McLaughlin 1 0-0 2, Ja.

Henry Hynoski got considerable air time during Tuesday's television coverage of the ticker-tape parade for the Super Bowl champion New York Giants' down the "Caynon of Heroes" in New York City.

Hynoski, a rookie fullback who was signed by the Giants in late July and found himself winning pro football's biggest prize just over six months later, was on a float with fellow backs Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw and other players.

He had a wide smile as he waved to the crowd and occasionally saluted his team's No. 1 status with his finger in the air. At one point, he picked up a football thrown onto the float from someone in the crowd, autographed it, then tossed it back to the fan.

When players were introduced in a ceremony that followed at City Hall, the emcee said, "And how about this rookie?" in introducing Hynoski.

The Elysburg resident and 2007 Southern Columbia High School graduate caught two passes for 19 yards - both for first downs - recovered a fumble and did what numerous experts have said was a great job as a lead blocker in the Giants 21-17 win over New England Sunday in Indianapolis.

Henry Hynoski's performance in the New York Giants' 21-17 win over the New England Patriots in Sunday's Super Bowl got some strong reviews on the national level.

Hynoski caught two passes for 19 yards and two first downs, made an important fumble recovery and blocked well from his fullback position.

Former NFL star Mike Golic, on ESPN's Mike and Mike Show on Monday morning, called Hynoski his unsung hero for the game.

"His lead blocking ... the Giants ran 28 times for 114 yards and averaged over four yards a carry ... and this guy paved the road," Golic said. "He was doing a great job lead blocking. Also one of the two fumbles the Giants had, he recovered one of them so they didn't lose possession. He did a great job like a fullback does - you stick your face right into the chest of a linebacker or whoever you're blocking and get them out of the way, and that's what he did."

Jeffrey Eisenband, writing on Yahoo!Sports' ThePostGame., talked about Hynoski's recovery of Hakeem Nicks' fumble:

"With about five minutes left in the third quarter and the Giants trailing 17-12, Hakeem Nicks caught Eli Manning's pass down the middle of the field at the Patriots' 30-yard line. Hynoski trailed the play.

Hynoski let his instincts do the work. As Nicks fought for extra yardage, Jerod Mayo popped the ball out of the receiver's hands. Hynoski darted out from behind the play and propped himself on top of the football.

"Everything's just reaction," said Hynoski, who also had a 13-yard reception to start the Giants' touchdown drive in the first quarter. "You always got to stay on your toes and luckily I was in the right place at the right time, and it proved to be a big play in the game."

On NFL.com, senior analyst Pat Kirwan wrote:

"Back in Week 9, the Giants went up to Foxborough and beat the Patriots 24-20 without Hakeem Nicks, Ahmad Bradshaw and Henry Hynoski. The main reason I picked the Giants to beat the Pats again was that those three men would be playing in this game. Hicks, Bradshaw and Hynoski combined 217 yards and a touchdown on 31 touches.

"Much has been made of the return to health on New York's defensive line, and rightfully so, but these three offensive players made a huge impact on the Super Bowl.

"(Punter Steve) Weatherford is clearly a solid candidate for the Unsung Hero of the Game, but Hynoski and linebacker Chase Blackburn deserve consideration, as well. Hynoski had two receptions for 19 yards (breaking a few tackles in the process), but his real contribution was lead-blocking for Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs. Hynoski's ability to read the defense and get up on linebackers was impressive. When I talked with Giants All-Pro guard Chris Snee after the game, he couldn't say enough about Hynoski's blocking. And don't forget: The rookie fullback saved the day by recovering a Nicks fumble, eventually leading to a Giant field goal."

And Sports Illustrated's Peter King, writing in his Monday Morning QB column on sportsillustrated.cnn.com, wrote a list of things he liked about the Super Bowl, two of which were:

"e. Henry Hynoski. Sounds like a fullback. Plays like one.

"f. And recovers fumbles like a champ."

Southern Columbia grad Henry Hynoski made his presence felt in his first Super Bowl and will be rewarded with a championship ring in his rookie season.

The New York Giants beat the New England Patriots 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI with Hynoski starting at fullback and catching two passes for 19 yards and making a key fumble recovery.

Hynoski's first catch came in the first quarter. On the right flat, the fullback gained 13 yards and the Giants went on to score their first touchdown of the game and take a 9-0.

Catch number two came in the second quarter and went for six yards, but Hynoski's biggest contribution was still to come.

With the Giants down 17-12 and at the 30 yard line in their own territory in the third quarter, Eli Manning completed a pass to Hakeem Nicks for 17 yards. Nicks was stripped by the Patriots' Jerod Mayo, but Hynoski came up with the recovery to maintain the Giants' possession. They went on to kick a field goal.

Hynoski was also on the field when Giants' running back Ahmad Bradshaw scored the winning touchdown.
