Former columnist shares flu tips

share thisMary Ann Swartz, who offered plenty of good advice with her former column, "Making Cents," passes along this flu-prevention advice. She credits infection-control nurses:
- Wash your hands with soap and water for three minutes; that's about the time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" to yourself. (Great for kids.)
- Use the paper towel with which you dried your hands to turn off faucets and open the door. Otherwise, you risk reinfecting your hands - especially if you're using public facilities.
- Always keep your hands pointed down toward the sink - putting them up will allow the water to run down the length of your arm and could spread germs.
- Bottled antiseptic hand wash is good, but it only works three times; after that you have to wash with soap and water.
