Valley Libertarians support 'Fair Districts PA' initiative
SELINSGROVE — The Susquehanna Valley Libertarian Party passed a resolution Tuesday night during its first quarter meeting in support of Fair Districts PA, a project of the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania, 226 Forster St., Harrisburg.
“I think this is something that all voters of the commonwealth should support,” Drew Bingaman, party chairman, was quoted in a press release from the organization. “The Pennsylvania Constitution states that our elections should be free and fair. That is not the case when elected officials get to choose their voters rather than the other way around.
“Under our current system, whichever major party is in control of state government at the time of redistricting gets a lock on that system.”
Bingman said that’s one of the main reasons that nearly 50 percent of all legislative seats go unchallenged. He said third party and independents are most affected by the current system of gerrymandering due to the districts being “locked up by one of the major parties; we just simply are not represented.”
The Susquehanna Valley Libertarian Party is a regional committee of the Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania, covering Snyder and Northumberland Counties.
