Lourdes players, coach gain honors

COAL TOWNSHIP - Six members of Lourdes Regional's All-American Football Conference championship team have been named to first team slots on the conference's all-star 2009 all-star team, and head coach Mike Klembara was named Coach of the Year in voting by the conference coaches.

Michael Bastian, Matt Gilger, Joe Gownoley adn Michael Wasko were each named to multiple first team slots, and Hunter Hoffman and Jake Lyash were also named to first team positions.

Bastian, who has run for more than 1,000 yards for two consecutive seasons, was named to the first team at tailback, defensive back and punter. Gilger was named at slotback on offense and safety on defense, Gownley was named at tight end and linebacker, and Wasko at offensive guard and defensive line.

Hoffman was named first team center on offense and Lyash first team defensive line. Lyash was also named a second team offensive guard.

Klembara, who has announced his resignation as head coach following this season, has led the Red Raiders to a 7-2 overall record and a spot in the Eastern Conference Class A playoffs. The Red Raiders will host Muncy on Friday night.

Several other Lourdes players were accorded second team and/or honorable mention status. Jon Vanaskie was named second team at both quarterback and placekicker, Dylan Lawrence at fullback and linebacker, John Gilger at offensive tackle and defensive line, and Owen Hager at offensive tackle and defensive line. Zach Chesney was named second team at linebacker and honorable mention at split end. Pat Shinskie was named honorable mention at linebacker.

Northwest's Steve Merth was named Most Valuable Player, East Juniata's Wade Truitt was named Offensive Player of the Year and Carson Long's Waddie Lattimer Defensive Player of the Year.

Woman listed in critical condition, seven others injured after Route 147 crash
