Mount Carmel Elks Lodge No. 356 will sponsor the local competition for the annual Elks “Hoop Shoot”, the national free throw shooting contest. It will be held Saturday, December 9, at the former Roosevelt Junior High School gymnasium at Fourth and Vine Streets, Mount Carmel. Entrance to the gym is in the alley behind the Knights of Columbus building. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. and the competition will begin at 9:45. Students attending Mount Carmel Area, Shamokin and Lourdes Regional are eligible to compete.
The contest is open to all boys and girls, ages eight through 13. There are three age categories in two groups divided by boys and girls: Age 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13. Each contestant has 25 shots at the hoop.
The boy and girl in each age group with the best scores will advance and represent the Mount Carmel Lodge at the district level. The Northeast District competition is scheduled for February 3, 2018 at the Washington Township Elementary School, Washington Blvd., Route 191, Bangor. A light breakfast will be held at the Bangor Elks Lodge #1106, 120 Broadway, Bangor, for the contestants. Registration begins after breakfast and practice will be prior to the start of the Hoop Shoot which is 1:00 p.m.
The Elks “Hoop Shoot” began as a local program by the Corvallis, Oregon Elks in 1946. The Elks Oregon State Association took it to a state level of competition in 1958. Gerald L. (Getty) Powell directed the program on a national level beginning in 1972. Three million youngsters, ages 8 through 13, participated last year.
