Mount Carmel man, 72, charged with child porn avoids additional jail time

SUNBURY — A 72-year-old Mount Carmel man charged with child pornography avoided additional jail time Monday when a county judge placed him on approximately three months probation and gave him credit for 269 days previously served in prison.

John Rochford, of South Poplar Street, who reportedly has multiple health issues, was sentenced by President Judge Charles Saylor to time served to 23 months in county prison on 10 counts of possession of child pornography. He was granted immediate parole.

Additional charges were not prosecuted.

Rochford is required to register as a Megan’s Law offender for 15 years and was ordered to pay a $500 fine plus costs.

The defendant, who has been out of jail for more than a year, pleaded guilty to the charges Oct. 2.

Rochford, who was represented by county public defender Amy Stoak, is accused by the state Attorney General’s Office of having approximately 40,000 images and 15 videos of child pornography on his home computer between March 29 and May 26, 2015. A two-month investigation revealed that he was allegedly using a peer-to-peer file-sharing program to download and disseminate child pornography.

He was charged by Agent Nicole L. Laudeman with 18 felony counts of sexual abuse of children, including 15 counts of possession of child pornography and three counts of dissemination of child pornography. He also was charged with a felony of criminal use of a communication facility.
