African violets are among the world’s most popular flowering houseplant. I can recall visiting my father’s Aunt Katy and seeing her collection of beautiful violets. I guess that is why I think that African violets, also called Saintpaulia, are only for those with a “green thumb.”

But we all can nurture a shelf full of violets by following a few basic steps. We really don’t need a green thumb; we need a plan of basic care for these lovely plants.

Lee has been a Penn State Extension Master Gardener of Columbia County since Spring 2017. She loves flower gardening and creating container arrangements and has a collection of house plants.
