Four workers were crushed to death in a “terrible accident” on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1896, at the Luke Fidler Mine.

The victims were identified as James Merritt, 25, married and the father of one child; Stephen Merritt, 28, also married and the father of a child; Patrick Lynch, 33, single; and Peter Bobert, 23, married and the father of one child. All resided at Springfield.
