In the May 1881 term of Northumberland County Court, the appropriately named Patrick Lawless and Alexander Brady, both of Shamokin, were cleared of guilt in a riot that led to the murder of another man in the borough.

William Lamey, 20, formerly of Danville, was fatally stabbed by John “Juke” Shovlin on Saturday, Dec. 18, 1880, during a brawl on Market Street.
