Grouse season opens statewide today and runs through Nov. 27. The late season will be Dec. 14-24. With its light, delicate flavor, grouse are a favorite among upland game hunters.

What bird vaguely resembles a miniature turkey due to the shape of its tail when spread, was once nicknamed a “fool hen” by early settlers, holds the status as Pennsylvania’s state bird and is well known for the drumming sound it makes when cupping and beating its wings?

If you guessed the ruffed grouse, you’re right!
