ELYSBURG — Mary Ann Wasakoski, 56 Hillside Ave., captured the top prize in this week’s News-Item Football Contest with 12 correct selections of a possible 16.

Mary Ann was one of four contestants with 12 correct selections. She was selected as this week’s champion by virtue of her choice of 43 as most points scored by a single team in last week’s games. West Virginia scored the most points in its 42-0 rout of Temple.

For capturing first place, Wasakoski will receive a $25 gift certificate compliment of The News-Item and redeemable at any business firm advertising in the contest.

Out of the four with 12 correct guesses, Jerry Thomas, 702 E. Kase St., Shamokin, gained second place by virtue of his pic of 40 as the most points scored. Thomas will receive a gift certificate for $15 for second.

Third place winner by virtue of his pick of 35 points was Steven Zarick, 1111 N. Franklin St., Shamokin. He will receive a $10 gift certificate.

Bob Schoppy, 1147 Scott St., Kulpmont, also had 12 correct selections, and guessed 35 as his point total, but Zarick was chosen by lot as third place winner. Although Schoppy was not selected as a winner, he will be eligible for the grand prize.
