Some 200 delegates representing employees of the Philadelphia & Reading railroad company convened at Shamokin on Sunday, Oct. 16, 1887, and voted to support striking coal miners of Luzerne and Lehigh counties.

An article in the Friday, Oct. 21, issue of the Sunbury American said the delegates met at the GAR Opera House in Shamokin, initially for the purpose of creating a division of the Knights of Labor, the union representing the striking miners.
