Even the most casual sports fan is likely to wonder why anyone would want to be a coach. When you see that top-level college football coaches can get multi-million-dollar buyouts when they get fired after less-than-successful records, you think that money might be the reason. You would be wrong.
The money is nice, but the top pro and college coaches aren’t any more dedicated to their profession than those who coach youth sports or scholastic teams. The well-paid, low-paid and volunteer coaches put in long hours and sacrifice time with their family.
You could even make the point that high school coaches or those who coach at small colleges are even more dedicated than their wealthier and more famous counterparts. They are subject to the same complaints and criticism by players’ parents and fans, yet they do it for what often amounts to far below the minimum wage when their modest salary is divided by the hours they log.
The reason for the dedication is their love for the sport and the enjoyment of getting young athletes ready, not merely for sports, but for life.
There is a similar situation for clergy. Except for a few televangelists, they are not going to get rich. They are not even going to make what most people would consider a decent living.
So why do they devote their lives to serving God by serving others and trying to help others develop and deepen their faith? They do it for love. They love God with all their heart, mind, soul and strength, and they love others as themselves.
We might not be members of the clergy, but we can pursue their vocation of love. The monetary payment for serving God might not be great, but the spiritual benefits are out of this world.
