SHAMOKIN — Maurer’s Dairy and Ice Cream Shoppe, a two-time ice cream national award winner, is now in its 23rd year of business and still going strong.

Owner Ken Bethge first bought Maurer’s Dairy in Tharptown in 1993 before moving to Shamokin in October 1996.

Maurer’s is famous for their fresh, homemade ice cream. Bethge hand-makes and packages the ice cream in an area built in the back of the restaurant.

Custom ice cream cakes are available for purchase, starting at $21.99. The standard is an 8-inch half-vanilla, half-chocolate cake, but Bethge said people can request different ice cream flavors for an additional price.

Bethge said they now make six-inch specialty ice cream cakes, including Snickers parfait, banana split, cookies and cream and more, starting at $15.

Maurer’s offers more than just ice cream to their customers.

Business hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Beginning in May, the restaurant will stay open until 9 p.m.

They offer a variety of breakfast meals until 2 p.m. daily, which includes eggs, french toast, omelets and more.

Before treating yourself to an ice cream sundae, you can also enjoy the dinner menu, which features cheesesteaks, chicken sandwiches, burgers made from fresh ground beef and other favorite diner-type foods. They also offer specials and homemade soups.

Bethge said with all of their food, they use better ingredients for a more quality product.

If you’re craving something other than ice cream to cool you down this summer, Maurer’s is bringing back their Popsicles pops, which are now called maurs bars.
