One thing about small-business owners: You don’t often see them with their feet up.

When they’re not serving customers, they might be cleaning their shops or businesses, checking on their next shipment of supplies or paying bills. And when they can pull themselves away from those day-to-day tasks, they’ll often be found making longer-term plans — setting goals for future hiring, expansion or other business growth.

In short, the folks who power a big chunk of our country’s economy don’t have a lot of time.

That’s why we at PPL Electric Utilities offer low-stress programs and rebates to help businesses save on lighting, refrigeration and other areas of high energy use. According to ENERGY STAR, 30 percent of the energy consumed by commercial buildings is wasted. That suggests to us that businesses of all types can probably find somewhere to save.

We’ll perform an energy assessment to see where businesses can save the most. Based on that assessment, we’ll make recommendations for improvements. Then, we offer rebates that help offset the costs of those improvements.

And our programs are set up so business owners don’t have to spend a lot of time doing paperwork. Contractors handle as many details as possible, so small-business people can keep their attention where it belongs — their business.

We’ve already worked with law offices, car washes and storage facilities, to name a few examples of small businesses. We’d like to keep adding to the list — especially during the summer months when energy use tends to increase.

These programs are available to large businesses, too, and we’ve worked to help some names you might recognize. They include iconic brewer D.G. Yuengling & Son, of Pottsville, and more locally, Watsontown Brick Co. and Sunbury Textile to name just a few.

We want small-business owners to know they can save, too. As I said before, they don’t have much time, and they might not be aware that these programs are here to help them.

So if you’ve got a small-business owner in your family or your circle of friends, do them a favor: Let them know they can probably save some energy and money. More info is available at www.pplelectric.com/businessrebates. (Info on similar programs for residential customers can be found at pplelectricsavings.com.)

We want to help them save so they can spend their time thinking about other things. Or maybe even, once in a while, putting their feet up.
