The San Francisco 49ers will face the New York Giants in a Monday Night Football matchup for Week 10,beginning at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN (live streaming via WatchESPN). The 49ers sit at 2-7 on the season, while the Giants sit at 1-7 — hardly the MNF matchup we’ve all been waiting for. That said, both teams have been exciting at times this season.

The 49ers have had serious injuries hurt their team on both sides of the ball. They rank 22nd in the league in total defense, and are particularly bad at forcing turnovers, ranking 31st in the league with a turnover differential of minus-13. The Giants are ranked pretty low in that regard as well, but still much better than the 49ers at No. 23 in the league, or a minus-4 differential. In addition to their better turnover differential, the Giants also rank 16th in the league in total defense.

On the offensive side of the ball, the 49ers are ranked about middle-of-the-pack at 14th overall, despite injuries to their starting and backup quarterbacks, plus several other starters on that side of the ball. New York ranks 22nd in the league in total offense.

Nick Mullens will be the starting quarterback for the 49ers on Monday, after his debut in relief of the injured C.J. Beathard went well against the Raiders the last time out.

Giants vs. 49ers news

Keeping up the trend of injuries, the 49ers ruled out safety Jaquiski Tartt, wide receiver Pierre Garcon and linebacker Reuben Foster for Monday’s game.

On the other hand, the Giants are coming off a bye week and only had three players listed on their final injury report, all of whom are expected to play on Monday.

As noted above, the 49ers have announced that Nick Mullens will be starting in primetime against the Giants. That doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road for Beathard, however.

One bright spot in an otherwise rough season for the 49ers has been the play of tight end George Kittle.

The 49ers found their pass rush against the Raiders the last time out. The Giants aren’t great at protecting Eli Manning, so they may have another opportunity to have a big game.

Both teams are seven-loss teams already, which means a head-to-head meeting between the two has serious NFL Draft implications.

The folks at Big Blue View took a look at the 49ers’ offense and the unique approach they have to personnel. They’ve also got three things to watch for on Monday.
