COAL TOWNSHIP — Emergency medical services were dispatched to the Northumberland County Jail Saturday evening for what was reported by county communications as an attempted hanging.

Warden Bruce Kovach declined to discuss details, but acknowledged that an inmate was taken by ambulance for medical treatment. He was still being evaluated as of about 7 p.m., Kovach said.

A dispatch at 5:16 p.m. said a suicide by hanging had been attempted, and that the man was unconscious but breathing.

On Jan. 28, the county settled a federal lawsuit filed by the widow of an inmate, Cyrus Lewis, who hung himself in the former county prison in Sunbury in 2014. The settlement was for $300,000 after Hope Lewis claimed the county failed to provide adequate suicide prevention for her husband.
