DANVILLE — A 7-year-old boy injured in a farming accident Sept. 29 died Thursday at Geisinger Medical Center.
Officials in the public relations and marketing department at Geisinger confirmed that Wellington Shaffer passed away in the hospital, but said they couldn’t release a date or time of death.
Efforts to reach Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn for that information and the cause of death were unsuccessful Friday. Unofficial sources reported the child died Thursday.
The boy had been in critical condition at Geisinger since falling into a trailer of corn Saturday night at his family farm along Dreibelbis Road in Lower Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County.
Shaffer’s 9-year-old brother and mother, Sarah Shaffer, jumped in after him in an attempt to pull him out. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries and were treated and released from Geisinger.
The trap was opened on the truck to remove Shaffer from inside and CPR was immediately administered upon his rescue. He was then flown by helicopter to Geisinger.
As of Friday afternoon, $10,853 was raised by 95 people in three days through a GoFundMe account created by friends and neighbors of the Shaffers. The amount exceeded the goal of $10,000.
The close-knit farming community came together Monday at Martz Game Farm to support the family. Hundreds gathered asking for a miracle for Wellington, who recently celebrated his seventh birthday.
